How to fix a leaking faucet stem

You discover a leak by the handle and base of your faucet chances are the packing in your faucet stem has eroded.

Instructions

  1. Shut off the water to the faucet. Take apart your faucet. You will need a screwdriver and pliers for this task.
  2. Examine the spindle or stem under the bonnet nut. Remove any packing string which has built up or tangled. Sinks that require packing don't have O-rings to replace.
  3. Wind the packing material clockwise two or three times around the spindle or stem. Use your fingers to press it into place. The packing should cover the threads of the spindle or stem.
  4. Tighten the nut over the packing/stem. Screw it back on clockwise using pliers. When you can't tighten the nut anymore it's on correctly.
  5. Reassemble faucet handle and check for leaks. If it does leak you should examine the valve seat and check for hair line cracks in the faucet.
